As Governors, we have access to and are expected to take part in relevant training when we are able to. In addition to this, once a year we have have training for the full Governing body. This is usually held on an evening at school and a trainer from Governor services comes and delivers the training for us. This year, the subject for the training was "Governors and Ofsted".
When our school has it's next Ofsted inspection, some Governors will be required to be available to attend and speak to the inspectors as part of the process. This has always been necessary, but now the Government and Ofsted have made governance a much more important part of the inspection. Governors will now be asked to demonstrate how they support the school and challenge the leadership. As this is such an integral part of being a Governor, the topic for next year's whole Governing body training is entitled: "How to support and challenge".
Sarah Bain and I have also recently been on a day's training course on "Safer Recruitment". This course gave us information on how to employ staff, ensuring that the welfare of all our children is safeguarded at all times. The training was very interesting and informative. I certainly feel I will be able to take part in interviewing new staff, with a much better understanding of the process.
I hope I have given you an insight into the training we as Governors undertake, and if there is any further information you require on this, or any other part of governance, please contact me through the school.
