Assessment In EYFS

At Shakespeare Infant, our Assessment in EYFS approach helps us understand each child’s learning and development in a way that is meaningful, age-appropriate, and focused on progress. We observe children as they play, explore, and interact, using what we see to build a clear picture of their strengths and next steps.

Assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is built into everyday routines. Staff use careful observation to note how children communicate, develop their independence, build relationships, and make progress across the areas of learning. This ensures assessment is continuous and reflective rather than something that happens only at specific times.

We work alongside families to support learning at home and in school. Parent conversations, regular updates, and sharing key observations help ensure you understand what your child is working on and how you can reinforce learning through everyday experiences. Together, we celebrate achievements and identify practical ways to help children grow in confidence.

Our goal is to ensure every child is seen as an individual learner. Assessment supports professional planning so that teaching is tailored to needs, including children who may require additional support or those who are ready for greater challenge. If you have any questions about how we assess learning in EYFS, our team will be pleased to talk with you.
