Mathematics
At Shakespeare Infant School, we are proud to provide an ambitious, broad and connected mathematics curriculum that develops confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians. We aim to foster a love of mathematics and a curiosity to explore mathematical ideas, ensuring that all children have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their future learning and everyday lives.
Children are given opportunities to explore mathematics through creative, practical and engaging learning experiences that are accessible to all. Learning is carefully sequenced and builds progressively from Reception through to Year 2, allowing children to make connections, deepen their understanding and develop fluency in key mathematical concepts.
We use a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, ensuring children gain a secure and adaptable understanding of number, calculation and mathematical thinking. Through the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach, children use practical resources and visual representations before moving on to abstract concepts, enabling all learners to access and succeed in mathematics.
Problem solving, reasoning and mathematical discussion are central to our curriculum. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their answers, identify patterns and make connections between different areas of mathematics. Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught and regularly revisited to support children in communicating their ideas confidently and accurately.
Through our mathematics curriculum, we aim to develop independent and reflective learners who are confident in applying their mathematical knowledge in a range of contexts. We want every child to leave Shakespeare Infant School with a strong foundation in mathematics, a positive attitude towards the subject and the confidence to embrace future challenges.
