History

At Shakespeare Infant School, we believe History should inspire children to become curious, inquisitive and reflective learners who develop an understanding of the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. Through engaging experiences and meaningful learning opportunities, children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and explore the lives of people from different times and places.

Children learn about changes within living memory, significant events beyond living memory, the lives of significant individuals and important historical events. Learning is enriched through exciting hooks, artefacts, visits, visitors, drama experiences and cross-curricular opportunities that bring history to life.

Learning builds progressively from understanding their own past and how they have changed over time in EYFS to developing knowledge of significant people, events and periods in Key Stage 1. Children learn to use a range of historical sources, including photographs, artefacts and written accounts, helping them to develop enquiry skills and make links between the past and present.

Through History, children develop the confidence to question, investigate and discuss historical events, gaining a deeper understanding of the complexity of people's lives and the impact of historical change. They are encouraged to become independent thinkers who can communicate their ideas and interpretations with increasing confidence.

Through our History curriculum, we aim to develop knowledgeable and passionate historians who appreciate their heritage, understand their place within history and gain the cultural capital needed to become informed and responsible citizens.
