Design & Technology
At Shakespeare Infant School, we believe Design & Technology should inspire children to become creative, curious and confident designers, makers and problem-solvers. Through practical, engaging projects, children develop the knowledge, skills and independence to design, make and evaluate purposeful products.
Children are encouraged to explore existing products, investigate materials, solve problems, and make thoughtful choices about the tools and materials they use. They learn to share ideas, test their designs, and make improvements, understanding that mistakes and experimentation are an important part of the design process. Learning builds progressively from exploring and experimenting with materials in the EYFS to developing practical skills and understanding of structures, mechanisms, including sliders, levers, wheels and axles, and construction in Key Stage 1.
Food Technology is an important part of our curriculum. Children learn about healthy eating, where food comes from and how ingredients can be prepared and combined safely. As they progress through the school, they develop their cooking skills, confidence and understanding of making healthy food choices.
Through Design & Technology, we nurture children’s imagination, resilience and resourcefulness, encouraging them to ask questions, take creative risks and learn through testing and evaluating their ideas. We want every child to experience the satisfaction of bringing an idea to life and to develop the skills and confidence to shape the world around them.
