Remote education provision: information for parents and carers at Shakespeare Infant School
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.
For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
Information will be sent to parents and carers regarding specific provision planned, how to access the provision and expectations. In the short term, provision may be provided on the school website, whilst more permanent solutions are set up. Shakespeare Infant School will hold introductions to Google Classroom, Tapestry and other IT programs used in school to support remote home learning, via zoom at convenient times for parents to access. |
We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, our music sessions, taught by a Hampshire Music specialist are recorded to allow children and parents to access the content when appropriate for them. |
We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:
Early Years and Key Stage 1 | We will set work that is of equivalent length to the core teaching that Infant School pupils would receive in school therefore this will equate to up to 3 hours a day in a fun, active way. |
Learning will be set using Google Classroom, or Tapestry in Early Years. This will provide a full digital platform to allow pupils receive and submit bespoke learning. The platform allows teachers to view and respond to the completed learning to allow ongoing assessment. Each morning the class teacher will engage with the pupils learning at home to enable them to interact through a live google meet. These meeting will be recorded to allow pupils to access them at different times. Early years children will also have the opportunity to submit learning through their existing Tapestry accounts. Children at Shakespeare Infant School also have access to additional digital resources such as Purple Mash and TT Rockstars. These are detailed in the learning links section of the website: https://www.shakespeareinfantschool.co.uk/learning-links/

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
|
We use a combination of the following approaches in line with government expectations to teach pupils remotely:
A typical remote learning daily timetable may look something like this:
Many videos and resources will be recorded so that you can access all information at a time that is convenient to you. We will also upload stories read by different members of staff for your children to listen to and join in with. |
Shakespeare Infant School appreciate this is a difficult and challenging time, especially if parents and carers are expected to work from home yourselves or have a number of children at home, however parents and carers must be there to support and set routines for children working online for the short sessions. We have high expectations but realistic ones for maintaining concentration and motivation for all and will do the very best we can to engage our home learners. We will aim to pre-record some work so that you can access it at an alternative time of day if required. |
Teachers will check pupils’ engagement with remote education daily to be able to provide swift and pertinent feedback when needed. Our Assistant Head will monitor individual engagement, and where this becomes a concern the class teacher will contact parents and carers in the first place, and following this, the Assistant Head will contact parents and carers to see if there are any technical issues affecting the engagement. If lack of engagement continues to be an issue the head teacher will discuss any concerns, with parents and carers. |
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
Shakespeare Infant School will look at completed learning submitted on the digital platforms daily, and will feed back on pupils’ work as necessary. Feedback may be verbal, during the live morning sessions or may be via a written comment which the pupils receive. |
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
Children with SEND will be invited into school under the vulnerable category. We will work with families to deliver remote education for pupils with SEND, through access to additional “live” lessons and bespoke grouped activities delivered by a teacher. Parents and Carers will be contacted regularly and will be supported by our INCO. |
Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
Individual pupils self-isolating are taught a planned and well-sequenced curriculum with meaningful and ambitious work each day in a number of different subjects, to mirror as much as possible, the learning the rest of their peer group are receiving. This will be delivered using the Google Classroom digital platform or Tapestry, to enable it to be closely monitored by the class teacher. |
