Universal Infant Free School Meals

With effect from 1 September 2014, all Key Stage 1 pupils are able to have a school meal at lunchtime, free of charge.

This applies to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and requires no registration.  Each child is entitled to a hot, two course meal at their school which will include a meat or non-meat main item, vegetables, potato, pasta or rice, salad and a dessert. There will be fresh water on the tables and we ensure that children have plenty to drink during lunchtime.

During the lunch break the children are cared for by our team of Midday Supervisory Assistants whilst at play and eating their meal.

Meals

Children may have a school meal, bring a packed lunch or go home for lunch.  School meals are provided by Hampshire County Council Education Catering and are cooked in our own kitchen.

To enable children to have the main course of their choice we operate a colour coded choice system.  Each morning children choose the main course and put their name next to the appropriate colour. All menus and colour charts are in each class.

All children at Shakespeare Infant School are entitled to free school meals under the Universal School Meals offer.

Meals brought from home

Shakespeare Infant School recognises the benefits of a well-balanced school meal for children, in the middle of the day, and recommends to parents that this is the best option. Should parents wish to provide a packed lunch from home please ask for the food policy from Shakespeare Infant School for further guidelines.

All lunches must be brought to school in a named container. Parents are advised to include an ice pack. Although the school provides ambient storage facilities, the school cannot take legal responsibility for foods prepared at home and then brought into school.

We are a nut free school. No nut products to be sent into school or consumed on the school premises.

To encourage children to broaden their diet, SIS are happy if children select a meal to try whilst also bringing their packed lunch in.  This meal must be booked on the day as the cook prepares meals to order.
